European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
