Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these drugs must be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
