This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will go on a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, One Piece will produce two seasons every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Learning from Past Breaks
The series anime previously took a half-year break that began in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the anime covering one chapter, with some alternatively handling more material or more to compensate for scheduling.
This concludes of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in seasons, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
