The Trump phenomenon's most telling and distinctive moments – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of several weeks, the American president commenced revealing all observers his designs for a lavish reception room two times larger compared to the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the eastern section to construct it.
He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of casualties due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and rising, and recently an analysis predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have attempted – really, no previous leader would have imagined – unilaterally destroying large sections of the White House to build a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of numerous the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom conduct transactions with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' toward 'the meek shall die to cholera'
As bewildering as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the old idea regarding democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics close to half – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched over the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of hostility who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this has happened at a slower pace, across decades instead of months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Jesus that I grew up with, as conceptually Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and since the fastest-growing cadre among Americans may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves non-believers or agnostics or nones. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that exist valuable insights of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is unquestionably not the account of an authoritative monarch emerging; instead, a baby is born to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to another nation to escape secret police. The child matures in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his doctrine concerns compassion for others, particularly for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a means to educate the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your coat you should give the person your additional clothing too.
The evident and clear truth that the Jesus of the gospels advocates for a kind of extreme compassion focused on the poor has perpetually caused the Christian faith rather a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be contained. During the 1950s it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Best of Us
So I have been inspired to see the persistent defiance against Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as substantial consolation to assist in constructing the initiative that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired voters to participate in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, with American flags throughout each rally and calls to the finest aspects in US history.
We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or not?
America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the highest within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended through connection to what makes it special and magnificent, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it imply feigning the worst about the nation and Christian faith did not happen; it signifies both modesty and faith, a mixture that committed national faithful should embrace.
